Physical Education Key Stage 4

This subject is very successful and established with 95% or more of our candidates achieving an A-C grade over the last five years. The candidate should be regularly participating in a number of sporting and/or physical pursuits. There has to be a genuine interest in all aspects of sport, training and human movement.

The candidate must be physically fit and in good health.

The course we cover is the 2016 WJEC GCSE in Physical Education. The course has an equally split practical and academic foundation. The breakdown is as follows:
– 50% Theory – Written Paper
– 42% Practical – Performance and knowledge in three physical activity areas. These must include one team activity and one individual activity.
– 8% Personal Training Plan (PFP) – Includes planning, performing and evaluating a specific fitness plan

Assessment

One written exam paper on all relevant subject areas. The GCSE Physical Education specification can be seen on the WJEC website. (50%)
Ongoing performance assessment and moderation against banded criteria in three physical activity areas (42%):
– 1 x team activity
– 1x individual Activity
– 1x either a team or an individual activity

Personal Fitness Plan (PFP) – Planning, performing, monitoring and assessing a specific activity based fitness programme. This will be a written document that will be marked and moderated for accuracy. (8%)

Progression

After undertaking a GCSE in Physical Education there are a number of post 16 courses which you could undertake in order to specialise further. Various BTEC L3 Courses are available in Sport and Physical Activity as well as ‘A’ Level Physical Education. Physical Education as a qualification could influence the following careers:
