Physical Education

DEPARTMENT LEADER: Mrs James

The P.E. Department aims to provide high quality teaching and learning experiences for our pupils; to ensure everyone achieves their full potential and has the opportunity to experience a range of activities. The department is passionate about designing a curriculum to encourage and nurture the physical, academic and social development of each pupil.

Pupils of Morriston Comprehensive have access to some fantastic facilities on the school site for them to use both during lessons and in numerous extra-curricular sessions

(Swimming Pool, Sports Hall, Gymnasium, Fitness Suite, Outdoor Netball Courts, All Weather 3G Astro Turf, Rugby and football grass pitches).

The department strives to develop an appreciation for all physical activities and encourage habits of lifelong participation.

Key Stage 3

P.E. for pupils in years 7 to 9 will build on and develop their knowledge, physical skills and understanding across a range of activities.

The department facilitates a wide range of activities at KS3, pupils will take part in Swimming, Gymnastics, Fitness, Basketball, Netball, Football, Rugby, Athletics, Rounders, Baseball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Life Saving, Orienteering and ‘team building’ activities.

Pupils are required to take part in all activities, where they will be taught to understand the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

Key Stage 4

WJEC GCSE Physical Education is a two-year course that focuses on the practical and theoretical elements associated with human movement, physical education and sport. There are two course units.

Unit 1 is theory based and assessed by a final exam (50%). The subject content focuses on five key areas:

  1. Health, training and exercise
  2. Exercise physiology
  3. Movement analysis
  4. Psychology of sport and physical activity
  5. Socio-cultural issues in sport and physical activity.

Unit 2 is practical performance. Pupils will be assessed through a practically based external moderation in three performance areas (sports/physical activities) (50%). These can be team or individual.

Extra-Curricular / Trips

Extra-Curricular provision at Morriston is where pupils have the opportunity to compete and represent Morriston Comprehensive school; frequently competing in competitions and tournaments at local level which further develops pupil character as well as their physical skills and tactical knowledge.

The P.E. department actively encourages all pupils to attend extra-curricular clubs that take place both during lunchtimes and after school. Working alongside the 5×60 clubs and our own WRU hub officer we are pleased to offer our traditional sports as well as more modern activities.

Meet the team

The P.E. Department is highly experienced and motivated to encourage pupil enjoyment and interest in P.E., as well as promote health and fitness and lifelong participation.
