Hairdressing Key Stage 4

Introduction:

Hairdressing is a hands-on course aimed at creative individuals and offers a great insight into the challenges and successes of running your own business.

This is a City and Guilds accredited course which is the equivalent of 2 GCSE’s. Students on this course have access to the only purpose-built salon in a school in Swansea providing a unique opportunity for study.

The Course:

The course consists of seven units:

  • Working in the hair industry
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Plaiting and twisting hair
  • Create an image based on a theme

The first two units are theory based where you will gain an understanding of working the hair industry and the health & safety practices in the industry.

The remaining five units are a combination of theory and practical work where students develop and expand their hairdressing skillset. Practical skills gained include: shampooing and conditioning hair, blow drying, setting/dressing the hair and hair up.

The final unit is where students have fun and show their creativity along with all the technical skills they have learned. Students plan and create a whole look including hair, make-up and an outfit based around a theme. Students first create a mood board to help plan their look. This theme can be historical, a special occasion or a fantasy look and students have creative freedom over this.

Assessment:

The Hairdressing course is assessed through practical observations/assessments, coursework and written assignments.

There is no examination for this course. Portfolios will be entered for a Level 2 Double Award and is equivalent to two GCSE’s.

All units of work are internally assessed and externally assessed by City and Guilds.
