A-Level Digital Technology

WJEC AS and A Level Digital Technology

 

Course Overview

In Year 12, students will learn how digital systems operate, are developed and the impact they have; and will design and create a game using Game Maker software.  In Year 13, students will learn about data, cyber security and networks; and will create a website that uses a database to store and provide data.

Entry Requirements: 5 A* to C grades at GCSE or equivalent.

Course Overview

Year Unit Title Details
12 AS Unit 1 Innovation in Digital Technology Students will learn about:

·       connected digital systems and smart devices;

·       the development of artificial intelligence;

·       digital technology development life cycles;

·       user-centred design, user experience and human computer interaction in digital systems development;

·       functions, purposes and uses of social media by individuals and organisations.

 

The unit is worth 20% of the A Level and is assessed by a 2:00 hour on-screen examination.

AS Unit 2 Creative Digital Practices The student will:

·       research game genres and hardware platforms;

·       plan a game in terms of timescale and activities to be completed at each stage;

·       use design tools and be aware of audience and user requirements when developing the game;

·       create the game using Game Maker software;

·       test each part of the game;

·       adapt and refine the game;

·       produce a 5-to-10-minute video demonstrating the appearance of the game and describing its functionality of coded and non-coded elements.

 

The unit is worth 20% of the A Level and is assessed by a non exam assessment carried out in class.

13 A2 Unit 3 Connected Systems Students will learn about:

·       contemporary practices involved in collecting, storing, analysing and using data;

·       cyber security;

·       digital technology networks.

The unit is worth 30% of the qualification and is assessed by a 2:30 hour on-screen examination.

A2 Unit 4 Digital Solutions Students will:

·       investigate transactional websites;

·       design a transactional website of their own choice; prepare text, images, video and audio assets; and design HTML, cascading style sheets and PHP code.

·       use Dreamweaver to create the web pages, including forms to capture data from users;

·       create an SQL database and PHP code to create the interactive elements of the web pages.

·       test, refine and evaluate the transactional website.

·       Produce a five-minute video that demonstrates the functionality and appearance of the transactional website.

The unit is worth 30% of the qualification and is assessed by a non exam assessment carried out in class.

 

Progression.  This A Level provides a foundation for the study of Digital Technology or a related area through a range of higher education courses, progression to the next level of vocational qualifications or employment
