Year 11 / Year 13 Letter to Parents – March 11

Dear Parent / Carer,
Following my letter last Friday regarding the return of some year groups, I want to give you more detail about the return of Year 11 and Year 13 next
week.

It is important to state at the outset that the precautions and rules we have in Morriston are not replacing any Welsh government public health guidance. It is vital that if your child or any member of your household show any Covid symptoms you all self-isolate immediately and keep your child home, book a test and notify the school. This will protect the school population and ensure we keep transmission rates low to avoid further lockdowns.

Welsh Government Law Change regarding smoke-free spaces

From 1st March 2021, all school grounds in Wales will become smoke-free spaces. Wales becomes the first country in the UK to extend its smoking ban to certain outdoor areas. Smoking in smoke-free spaces – which not only includes school grounds but also public playgrounds, outdoor day-care and child-minding settings as well as hospital grounds – from 1st March could result in a £100 fine.

As a school we acknowledge the important role we play in protecting everyone from harmful second-hand smoke and we especially recognise the important role that adults have in influencing the attitudes and smoking behaviour of children and young people. Banning smoking in places where children and young people spend their time will de-normalise smoking and reduce the chances of children and young people starting smoking in the first place– ultimately saving lives.

Please be assured we deal swiftly and appropriately when, on the exceedingly rare occasions, pupils have brought cigarettes/lighters into school in the past. We view such actions as a profoundly serious violation of the school code of conduct, we are therefore pleased to learn that the Welsh Government has reinforced this view in a legal sense.

I look forward to having your support to ensure we all play our part in building a healthier future. Those looking for help to stop smoking can access Wales’ free NHS support service Help Me Quit on 0800 085 2219 or visit www.helpmequit.wales for help and support, including access to free stop smoking medication.

Kind regards

Mrs Nicola Altman

Rugby Success

It is wonderful to see Niamh Terry an ex-Morriston Comprehensive school pupil achieving such success. Morriston is very lucky to have a large number of very successful sports men and women on the national and international stage, including Gwen Crabb and Ross Morarity on the rugby pitch.

Well done Niamh, we are all very proud of you.

Thank you from Morriston Hospital

Thank you from Morriston Hospital

Sixth form students took Selection boxes to the pupils in Morriston Hospital Children’s Ward at the end of the term and this is the thank you card and letter that we have had.

Parental Letter – February Half Term 2021

As we reach the end of the half term I wanted to keep you updated on what is happening nationally and in Morriston Comprehensive. As a school we fully appreciate how difficult and challenging the last six weeks have been for parents, students and staff, ensuring that our children are engaged in distance learning whilst aware of the pressures on their mental health and wellbeing. We all know that being in school is so important to a child’s progress and learning.

Qualifications Wales – Learner Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Please find below a letter to learners from Qualifications Wales giving an update on arrangements for GCSEs, AS and A levels, Skills Challenge Certificate  (Welsh Bacc) and Essential Skills Wales qualifications.

I will continue to share any further guidance I receive.

As always please be assured that all staff will be working hard to ensure that your child receives every opportunity to gain the grades they are capable of.

It is vitally important that your child is engaging with their teachers and participating in the blended learning that is taking place during school closure.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind Regards

Safer Internet Day 2021

Safer Internet Day 2021 is being celebrated globally on Tuesday 9th February 2021 with the slogan “Creating an internet we trust”, the day provides a fantastic opportunity to engage with children about their digital lives. I would like to say well done to our Year 8 team consisting of Emma, Errin, Lexie, Lily, Ruth and Sian for their ‘Fake News’ film entry in this year’s Safer internet day competition. Some amazing entries were submitted from so many schools this year with some really important pieces of advice on staying safe online. Critical thinking is as important as ever during remote/distance learning – Question, evaluate and reflect on the online content that you see. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can create for next year’s competition.

To help you talk to your child about having a positive and safe time online take a look at the parents and carers resource pack.
