Hospitality and Catering (WJEC Vocational Award)

This exciting, practical course gives students the opportunity to learn about the fast‑paced world of food, cooking and hospitality. It combines real‑life skills with creative learning and is ideal for students who enjoy hands‑on work.


What will my child study?

The course is made up of two main units:

Unit 1: The Hospitality and Catering Industry

Students will learn about:

  • Different types of hospitality businesses (restaurants, hotels, cafes, etc.)
  • Job roles and career opportunities
  • Health and safety in kitchens
  • Food safety and hygiene
  • How businesses operate successfully

Unit 2: Hospitality and Catering in Action

Students will:

  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals
  • Learn how to cook and present dishes
  • Understand nutrition and balanced diets
  • Develop practical cooking skills
  • Evaluate and improve their own work

How is the course assessed?

  • Exam (40%)
    • 1 hour 20 minute written paper
    • Tests knowledge of the industry
  • Coursework (60%)
    • Practical cooking assessment
    • Completed in school (around 12 hours)
    • Includes planning, preparing and evaluating dishes
