Exam board: WJEC | First teaching: 2026 | First exams: 2028
The GCSE Science (Double Award) is a two-year course (Years 10–11) that develops students’ understanding of the world through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It is designed to support the Curriculum for Wales.
What will students learn?
Students study a broad and balanced science curriculum across three disciplines:
- Biology – how living organisms work, including cells, the human body, ecosystems, genetics and health
- Chemistry – materials, reactions, the Earth’s resources and sustainability
- Physics – forces, energy, electricity, waves and the universe
Lessons focus on real-world applications, helping students understand how science affects everyday life, the environment and future technologies.
Skills students will develop
As well as subject knowledge, students will build essential skills:
- Problem solving and critical thinking
- Practical and investigative (scientific enquiry) skills
- Data handling and mathematical skills
- Communication and teamwork
- Awareness of environmental, ethical and global issues
Practical work is an important part of the course and is assessed throughout.
How is the course assessed?
The qualification is made up of 7 units:
- 6 written exams (covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics)
- 1 practical enquiry unit (hands-on investigation plus written task)
Weighting:
- Written exams: 90%
- Practical enquiry: 10%
Students are entered for either:
- Higher Tier (grades A–D)*
- Foundation Tier (grades C–G)
Final grades are awarded as a double grade (e.g. AA, BB, CC).
Course structure
Students typically study:
- Year 10: Foundations in Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- Year 11: More advanced topics and practical enquiry
The course is designed to build knowledge step-by-step and help students make connections across different areas of science.
