WJEC Level 1/2 Engineering (Technical Award)

This course is a practical and hands-on qualification that introduces students to the world of engineering. It is designed for learners aged 14–16 and can be studied alongside GCSEs.

Engineering is an important and growing industry, with many exciting career opportunities. This course helps students understand how engineering is used in real life and develops skills that are valued in many careers.


What will students learn?

The course is split into three units, covering how engineers design, make and solve problems:

  • Unit 1: Manufacturing Engineering Products
    Students learn how to read engineering drawings, plan how products are made, and safely use tools and equipment to create a product.
  • Unit 2: Designing Engineering Products
    Students explore how products are designed and improved. They will adapt an existing product and develop their own design ideas to meet a specific brief.
  • Unit 3: Solving Engineering Problems
    Students learn about materials, modern engineering developments and how engineering affects everyday life. They also develop problem-solving skills using maths and scientific knowledge.

How is the course assessed?

  • 60% coursework (Units 1 & 2)
    Practical projects completed in school under controlled conditions
  • 40% written exam (Unit 3)
    A 1 hour 30 minute exam testing knowledge and problem-solving skills
